Green Lantern #6 Review

This issue finally does whats been teased since issue 1 and it takes the Green Lantern ring away from Hal almost completely for the whole issue! Unlike in issue 1 this separation seems to be doing something good for Hal, his relationship with Carol is going well and Hal is still managing to be a hero without the ring. It’s a brilliant change of pace and almost serves as a what if issue to see what Hal would be like if he never got the ring in the first place.

This issue doesn’t just focus on Hal however as Sinestro is still the Green Lantern of sector 2814 and we get to see the continuation of his vendetta against his former corps. Sinestro has been hunting down Lyssra Drak, the holder of the Book of Black, and this issue sees their confrontation, as well as some more visions of the future from the book itself. These visions lead to Sinestro re-recruiting Hal as a temporary Green Lantern, albeit against his will.

Honestly I’d have liked to have seen more of Hal without the ring, he was more relatable as a character, not having superpowers and all, plus he seemed to be getting used to having a ‘normal’ life. Mike Choi’s art helps extenuate the simple nature of Hals life, and it’s a nice change from the hectic blast of colour we usually get in Mahnukes Green Lantern comics.

Geoff Johns is a master of writing Green Lantern now and he knows how to keep readers interested, just as we’re at the end of a storyline the addition of the visions from the book of black is a brilliant way to tease what’s coming next albeit a slightly obvious one that I’m sure has been used before.

Verdict

A brilliant what if story, where we get to see Hal adjusting to life without the Green Lantern corp as well as a glimpse into the future and possible plot twists for the title

4/5
